When you’re working at height, you’ll want the reassurance that you’re fully protected against the risk of an accident. In the UK, thousands of workers are injured, some seriously, every year due to falls from height while, on average, several people die every month from injuries sustained in this type of tragic accident. As an employer or warehouse manager, you have ultimate responsibility for ensuring that your business complies with Work at Height Regulations, and for safeguarding your colleagues from one of the most common, but preventable, accidents in the workplace.
While various options are available for enabling warehouse operatives to work safely at height, some – such as scaffolding and ladders – simply aren’t practical in some circumstances. Scaffolding, for example, takes time to be erected and is only suited to providing access to a specific area of the warehouse (for example, to carry out maintenance on lighting). Ladders, while easy to move, do not always offer a safe solution for working at height.
How Forklift Safety Cages Protect Your Warehouse Operatives
Forklift safety cages, also known as man cages or access platforms, are a cost-effective and practical way to enable staff to work at height without additional equipment. Attached to the front of a forklift, a safety cage is lifted to the required height, giving the worker plentiful space and manoeuvrability to carry out their duties without the risk of falling.
Forklift safety cages are equally suited to brief tasks as to more time-consuming work, such as loading or unloading storage shelves. The enclosures are large enough to accommodate two people, or one person with stock or materials.
At Steps and Stillages, safety is our priority, so our lift cages for forklifts include several important features to help to protect your workers:
1) Tool tray: When working at height, it’s vital that the operative has space to move with minimal bending and turning, so the integrated tray helps to keep the required tools within easy reach.
2) Non-slip floor: The slip-proof anti-static rubber mat floor reduces the chance of an operative falling inside the cage.
3) Inwards opening door: To prevent accidental opening, our cage doors only open inwards and feature a flick-over catch for additional protection.
4) Safety harness: As an optional extra, a safety harness can be attached securely to the two front corner bars, conforming to EU safety standards EN358, EN361, and EN362.
5) Anti-slip fork sleeves: Suitable for most forklifts with adjustable forks, our safety cages feature an anti-slip mechanism to prevent them from slipping off the forks while in use.
