Working at height poses many challenges for business, least not the need to ensure that personnel are kept safe and that the chance of a fall is eliminated. In fact, due to the serious risk of injury or death if an accident was to occur, working at height is governed by the law, with the Work at Height Regulations (2005) placing a legal responsibility on employers to make sure that appropriate steps are taken to protect the safety of their workforce.
Traditional methods for accessing heights are sometimes far from perfect. Ladders, for instance, must be secured and the possibility of a fall is possible, even with precautions, while scaffolding is time-consuming to erect and expensive, especially for routine tasks.
Forklift safety access cages are a cost-effective and simple alternative.
What are Forklift Safety Access Cages?
Also known as access platforms, forklift safety access cages provide easy, inexpensive access to high spaces without the need for cumbersome equipment. They are equally suited to reaching items stored in high places in warehouses or for carrying out essential maintenance on lighting or ceilings.
Unlike a ladder, which is narrow, open, and easy to fall off, a forklift safety access cage provides a solid platform on which to stand, surrounded by a robust cage that guarantees to prevent the worker from falling, while allowing them easy access to carry out their work.
What Variations are Available?
While the basic principle that underpins forklift safety access cages is broadly the same, at Steps and Stillages we recognise that every business’s needs are different. For this reason, we can supply safety access cages in a range of styles and with different features, including:
1 or 2 person cages: For some tasks, only one person is required, but for more complex jobs a two-man team is sometimes necessary. Our two-person cages are a far safer and more practical option than attempting to use two ladders, and much cheaper than erecting scaffolding!
Goods cages: If products need to be stored in a high place, or equipment is required at height to carry out essential maintenance or repairs, a larger goods cage will enable a worker and the goods to be safely manoeuvred into position.
Accessorised cages: At Steps and Stillages, we supply 1000mm x 1000mm safety access cages with additional accessories, such as a gas cylinder opening or slip-proof antistatic rubber bases. Wheels can be fitted to cages, while safety harnesses can offer additional security for personnel working at height.
Bespoke cages: If you require a different sized safety access cage or prefer a certain colour, we can design and manufacture a cage that meets all your requirements.
